If you have a project or job that requires moving something extremely heavy, very large, or to a high place, a crane might be your best option for getting it done. However, not everyone has a crane sitting around. The good news is that it is possible to rent a crane. Before you get too excited, there are some things you need to know about crane rentals.

Bare of With an Operator

Companies that rent out cranes offer the service either with or without an operator. Some allow you to choose. You need to decide if you or someone you know is capable of operating big machinery, specifically the type of crane you need. You may be able to have the company give you instructions on how to use it, but only do this if you are comfortable with the idea. Unless you have experience, you could be setting yourself up for causing serious damage or injuries.

Insurance

Be sure to read the rental agreement. It is important that the agreement includes insurance coverage. This should include paying for any damage to the crane itself and for any other damages caused by the operation of the machine. You may be required to purchase separate insurance to make sure you are protected. Contact your regular insurance company and ask if your homeowner's, business, or auto insurance will provide you with the protection you need. If the rental includes an operator, make sure he or she is covered as well.

Inspect the Machine Before It Leaves the Lot and Again When It Is Returned

You do not want to be held responsible for any damage to the machine, whether you have insurance coverage or not, that you do not incur. Insurance companies may try to find a way to make you pay for it. Walk around the machine, taking pictures. Be sure to note any dings, scrapes or other damage, no matter how small it may seem. It is best to have someone from the company do this inspection with you and sign any documentation you make.

If possible, have someone from the rental company come to the worksite. Explain what it is you need done. This way, you can be sure to get the machine that is best-suited for your project. There are many different types of cranes. While most of them can do any job, the different types specialize in what they can do. This will get the job done faster and safer.
